Product development and portfolio management criteria cover the processes for executing new product development projects and programs, including phase-gate processes. This also covers product portfolio management (PPM) including the processes for evaluating new and existing products and product portfolios to provide the most valuable, balanced, and well-aligned portfolio of products. Portfolio management adds discipline and structure to determining which products and product innovations should be pursued. Portfolios of existing products, as well as product innovation investments can be rated and prioritized based on financial value to the business; strategic value to the business; optimal balance of products and product investments; and available resources. By providing an unbiased decision support environment, companies can take product decisions beyond politics to strategic, business decision making.

The Manufacturing Process Management Knowledge Base addresses the processes associated with Manufacturing Engineering, or Digital Process Design, including the design, documentation, validation, management, and communication of production processes to both internal and external entities.Manufacturing process management (MPM) is a discipline that provides better planning, design, and simulation of product processes for manufactured items. MPM focuses on developing and implementing optimal production capabilities to produce products at competitive costs. MPM covers a number of different areas, with a strong focus on the simulation of production processes, which leads to the term "digital manufacturing." Benefits of MPM include lowered costs, faster time to mass production volume, higher quality, better design for manufacturability, and many others. MPM provides the tools required by manufacturing engineers to plan and deploy optimal facilities and processes. MPM is a complementary solution to most product data management (PDM) systems, providing additional focus on the actual work required to produce the products.

New product ideas and requirements come from many sources. Customers, suppliers, employees, and partners can be a source of valuable feedback on existing products and ideas for new products. Capturing these ideas in a central location so they can be reviewed and scored for consideration in an efficient manner can lead to breakthrough product innovations and new sources of intellectual property.
