Tools used during testing are typically "black-box" tools; they do not require information about the structure of the code to do their work. Instead, tests may be derived from a variety of sources; requirements, risks, regulations, fault models, critical-path, use cases and so on. Test automation puts a machine in charge of performing a known test and allows tests to be executed quickly, accurately, and repeated as desired--but these great advantages must be offset against higher initial costs, maintenance costs, and a reduced ability to spot unexpected problems. Flight recorders measure aspects of the system under test--the running code and the environment it is running in--and allow the measurements to be recorded, analyzed, and compared. They can give early warnings of unexpected systematic problems, and may be used in live operation as well as test. Fault injection tools simulate problems in the environment that the system is operating in. They allow tests that would otherwise be impossible or inconvenient, and can provide a fast and effective route to discovering problems that would be hard to show in an un-equipped test environment.
